Sportsmen and women are prone to injuring their groins
These injuries are often referred to as a sportsman’s hernia
A true hernia is not usually present
Symptoms include pain during and after exercise and the pain may prevent training
It is advisable to be assessed by a doctor with an interest in sports injuries
When diagnosed, treatment is usually a course of physiotherapy
If physiotherapy and rest from training do not work, surgery may be required
X rays, Ultrasound or MRI scanning may be useful in some patients to exclude other causes
At surgery, a variety of injuries are encountered but surgical repair is usually successful
Postoperative rehabilitation is in conjunction with a physiotherapist
Most sportsmen should be able to return to their sport in 6 weeks
