Mr Alan Woodward has been an NHS consultant general surgeon for 14 years and is based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, South Wales. His main expertise is in hernia surgery.
Alan has written professionally about groin hernia repairs under local anaesthesia and has published extensively in this area.
He has also created a local anaesthetic mixture, which enables patients who are unfit for general anaesthesia to undergo hernia repair safely as a day-case procedure. This development ensures that patients are not turned down for surgery and prevents them from developing bowel obstruction, a recognised complication of hernias.
He has extensive experience of laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery in the repair of groin and incisional hernias and the treatment of sportsman’s groin. In conjunction with experienced physiotherapists, he has treated professional athletes with groin injury.
Alan also has significant experience of complex repair of the abdominal wall and removal of the fatty apron (known as abdominoplasty) following pregnancy, working closely with plastic surgeons.
Dr Pete Fitzgerald is an experienced Consultant anaesthetist who deals with all types of anaesthesia. He has particular expertise in patients who may be difficult to anaesthetise due to anatomical reasons.
Alan also works closely with Mr Bill Dixon who is a highly experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeon who works in Swansea and Cardiff. He provides expertise in abdominoplasty and works jointly on patients who benefit from abdominal wall repair and removal of the fatty apron. This is usually after significant weight loss or pregnancy when the shape of the abdominal wall fails to return to normal.
